ATM/POS Fraud reaches new heights - is that a smoke detector?
Amazing but true, criminals are getting very sophisticated. Basically they install a skimmer on the door to an ATM, so when you swipe your card to get into the ATM vestibule (common in Europe), you've given the criminal a copy of your card. Then a micro video camera disguised as a smoke detector records you as you are keying in your PIN. All of this is transmitted via a cell modem in the smoke detector.
As PIN debit and shared ATMs networks are very common in Europe, the thieves can use the cloened card to make purchases and withdraw money all over the place.
Ah - yes - there is no good fix to this problem, other than covering the keypad when you type in your PIN.
